As I make my way to the #EGYPS2023 EGYPES – Egypt Energy Show, I’m reminded of the common challenge that many of my old friends and colleagues in #Egyptian energy and oil & gas sectors face when it comes to embarking on a digital #transformation journey.
While their goals are often ambitious, the lack of clarity around what they want can lead them down the wrong path.
In my discussions with various professionals, I’ve realized that one of the major issues that they face is not knowing exactly what they want to achieve with their digital transformation efforts. Often, they have a broad goal, such as connecting all operational sites and adding analytics to ease the decision-making process. However, they start communicating with every known vendor without a defined scope of work, which can lead to overspending or spending in the wrong direction. The devil is always in the details.
To avoid such issues, it’s essential to take a step back and consider the following three important points:
- No digital transformation can occur without connecting assets to the main network.
- Connectivity must be done with a focus on #OT #cybersecurity and a robust network.
- Making use of what you already have can be a key factor in ensuring success.
Starting your digital transformation journey can seem daunting, but by following these four key steps, you can set yourself up for success:
- Choose the right digitalization journey partner who understands your organization’s goals and has the expertise to guide you through the journey.
- Conduct parallel #assessments for digitalization and cybersecurity/network. These assessments will help you define the scope of work and build a phase-wise approach and remediation roadmap that aligns with your budget and timeline.
- Define a clear scope of work based on assessment results and build a phase-wise approach and remediation roadmap. By having a clear roadmap, you can avoid overspending and ensure that you’re spending in the right direction.
- During execution, drive adoption by communicating effectively and implementing a training program. Any change in an organization requires heavy communication at all levels to achieve the right support for the mission and vision. A training program can also help ensure the future success of the program after implementation.

It’s important to avoid spending in the wrong direction or overspending and focus on the basics first while keeping the lines of communication open with all employees and investing in employee training to drive adoption.
In summary, digital transformation can be a challenging journey, but it’s essential to start with a clear goal and follow a structured approach to ensure success. By choosing the right digitalization journey partner, conducting parallel assessments for digitalization and cybersecurity/network, defining a clear scope of work, and driving adoption during execution through effective communication and a training program, you can achieve your digital transformation goals and set yourself up for success in the long run.
